Usamos o "there to be" para indicar a existência de pessoas, situações e objetos. Tem o mesmo significado que o verbo "haver" (ou "ter" no sentido de existir), em Português. Observe as imagens:

 Use THERE WAS (no singular) ou THERE WERE (no plural) para dizer o que havia nos quartos de Tom e Ana antes de eles se mudarem, de acordo com os exemplos:

Tom's room

Ex: There was a chest of drawers.

Ana's room

Ex: There were two chairs.

Usamos "there is" e "there are" para descrever imagens.
